Advanced Disposal, an integrated environmental services company, hosted community leaders, elected officials and other key stakeholders for a presentation and tour yesterday at Glacier Ridge Landfill. Attendees learned about the progress made since March 2014, when the company began a large-scale waste relocation project in conjunction with a landfill expansion effort, which is now moving into its third phase.
In 1989, the Hechimovich Sanitary Landfill, which is also known as the Land Gas Reclamation Landfill (LGRL) and sits immediately adjacent to Glacier Ridge Landfill, was identified as a Superfund site and added to the National Priorities List by the Environmental Protection Agency due to groundwater contamination. Superfund designation means that conditions exist which have the potential to impact local ecosystems or populations.
In 2013, Advanced Disposal received state and local approval for the expansion of the Glacier Ridge Landfill to the southeast of the current permitted area. The majority of the expansion footprint consists of construction in an area where the LGRL is currently located. In order to continue development of the Advanced Disposal facility, the waste from LGRL is being exhumed and safely disposed of in the Glacier Ridge Landfill.
“The project presented a rare opportunity to address a significant environmental condition through an expansion of the landfill,” said Jay Warzinski, Advanced Disposal’s corporate director of landfill operations. “The opportunity to remove the source of contamination is due to the proximity of the lined Glacier Ridge Landfill. We’re proud of our continued efforts to clean up the LGRL site while our successful expansion efforts allow Glacier Ridge to remain an environmentally safe and sound disposal facility for many years to come.”
The idea of the project began a decade ago and was part of a Holistic Agreement negotiated between the landfill and the State of Wisconsin during the expansion project being pursued at that time.
