Outgoing trade group chairman Charles “Charlie” Appleby fostered industry growth for decades
The private waste and recycling industry in the United States today inducted one of its titans, a local businessman from Northeast Florida, into its Hall of Fame.
The National Waste & Recycling Association (Waste & Recycling) honored Charles C. Appleby, its retiring chairman and a founder of Advanced Disposal, at an awards ceremony today in Atlanta as part of the 46th annual WasteExpo Conference and Exhibition, North America’s largest waste and recycling tradeshow.
“The waste and recycling industry stands on the shoulders of giants like Charlie Appleby, whose contributions have influenced waste collection, recycling and industry innovation in the United States for decades and will continue to do so for decades to come. Charlie has also been an incredible source of calm leadership during a period of great change for our association, working tirelessly to lead the development of a strong organization to benefit the entire industry. We are proud today to induct him into our Hall of Fame,” said Sharon H. Kneiss, president and CEO of Waste & Recycling.

Appleby, noted for fostering growth at multiple enterprises in the waste and recycling sector, is one of the founding organizers, chairman and CEO of Advanced Disposal. When Appleby and his business partners founded Advanced Disposal in late 2000, it was a 3-truck operation.?Today, the company operates in 17 states and the Bahamas with 91 collection operations, 42 landfills, 25 recycling facilities and 72 transfer stations. It is the largest privately-held solid waste business in the United States and the fourth-largest overall.
He has been a servant of the industry, holding his position as Chairman of the Board for Waste & Recycling since 2011 while also serving on the association’s waste and recycling service providers’ advisory board.
“Receiving the honor of induction into the Hall of Fame prior to my upcoming retirement from the waste industry is truly meaningful,” Appleby said. “I was given the opportunity to succeed by others and have worked relentlessly not to disappoint them. My successes also would not have been possible without my family having my back, especially my wife of 40 years, Martha.”
In 2009, Appleby was named an Ernst and Young Florida Regional Entrepreneur of the Year, and he received the Business Ambassador Award from Gov. Rick Scott in July 2013 as well as the Distinguished Eagle Scout Award in October 2013. His community service includes positions with the Jacksonville Civic Council, the Jacksonville Retirement Reform Task Force and the SunTrust Jacksonville Advisory Board. In addition, Appleby, a retired colonel in the Florida Army National Guard, served his country during a decorated 31-year military career and was selected for promotion to brigadier general.
